Blow by blow recap from AUSX open at Marvel

AUSX Supercross 2025 - Round Four - Marvel Stadium, Melbourne

AUSX Boost Mobile Supercross 2025
Round Four – Melbourne, VIC

By Tom Reynolds

The night opened with the familiar, professional feel of the Aus X open as the rider intros brought Supercross back to Marvel Stadium. The Lawrence brothers soaked up a home crowd almost a year on from their last hit-out here, and it showed. After another season in the US and a sharp run through Bercy last weekend, like the pros they are, they dropped straight into the atmosphere like it was nothing… calm, comfortable, and completely in their element.

Hunter was the man of the moment, carrying the number-one plate and clearly enjoying it. He even joked in the presser earlier that it was one thing he had over Jett for now, and he planned to make the most of it.

With the right amount of hype and ceremony, the 2025 program rolled into gear. Plenty of energy, but not the over-the-top stuff you sometimes see in the US… just a solid launch into the SX2 heats.

SX1 Qualifying – Top Ten

Qualifying ran earlier in the afternoon before the crowd filtered in, and as always, it gave us a decent hint at form without telling the whole story. Fast laps are one thing… racing is still the proper measure. Even so, the pace up front was tight, and the usual suspects were right where you’d expect them.

Jett Lawrence

SX1 Qualifying Top Ten

  1. Jett Lawrence Honda 57.247
  2. Luke Clout Kawasaki 57.324
  3. Dean Wilson Honda 57.334
  4. Hunter Lawrence Honda 57.661
  5. Cedric Soubeyras Honda 57.920
  6. Matt Moss Kawasaki 58.326
  7. Mitchell Harrison Yamaha 58.507
  8. Dylan Walsh KTM 58.599
  9. Aaron Tanti Yamaha 58.608
  10. Dylan Wills Husqvarna 58.886

SX1 Heat One

Hunter Lawrence (Honda Racing Corporation) slotted into second behind Luke Clout (Penrite Empire Kawasaki) off the start, then moved past both Clout and Matt Moss (Moss Institute Kawasaki) before the end of lap two. Once in front, Hunter controlled the heat with ease, stretching the gap a little each lap.

Moss held second from start to finish, absorbing constant pressure from Clout, who had moments of speed but couldn’t make a move stick. Dylan Wills (Forth Jaecoo Yamaha) kept them close in fourth, including a cheeky brush with the tough blocks that somehow worked out.

Dylan Walsh (KTM Racing Team) wrapped up the top five with a tidy, no-surprises ride.

SX1 Heat Two Results

Cedric Soubeyras (Boost Mobile Honda) absolutely ripped the holeshot in the second Heat, claiming the best launch of the night and earning himself lifetime bragging rights in the process. He led the opening lap with Jett Lawrence (Honda Racing Corporation) and Dean Wilson (Honda Racing Corporation) tucking in behind him.

Jett didn’t waste a second. He moved past Hayden Mellross (KTM Racing Team) first, then went straight after Soubeyras and took the lead in less than half a lap. Once in front, he stretched the gap immediately and never looked threatened.

Wilson started deeper in the pack but built into the race nicely, reeling Soubeyras in across the final lap and taking second with a clean pass. Soubeyras held together well for third after that electric opening.

Behind them, Aaron Tanti (CDR Yamaha) and Mitchell Harrison (Yamaha) settled into a steady fight for fourth and fifth. Mellross had a small tip-over entering the final rhythm section, but it didn’t affect the shape of the top five.

Jett crossed the line with a tidy whip for the fans… the kind of relaxed finish that tells you exactly how comfortable he was out front.

SX1 LCQ

Hayden Mellross ripped the holeshot and never looked troubled. Liam Jackson hung onto him for a while, Jye Campbell looked solid, and Dylan Wood had enough pace to make himself safe. Once the field spread out, it turned into two races: the four-rider fight up front… and everyone else trying not to bin it.

The bigger SX1 field meant the LCQ actually mattered this time. Six spots on the line, and there was a proper scramble for the final transfer positions early, but by the last lap, the gap back to seventh was a small postcode.

SX1 Superpole

Superpole delivered exactly what everyone expected… the Lawrence Show. Jett Lawrence went last, carried all the pressure, and still smoked everyone with a ridiculous 56.076. He looked like he was cruising, which is a bit rude, but that’s Jett.

Hunter Lawrence slotted into second with a strong 56.422, tidy and controlled, just not quite Jett-speed.

Dean Wilson was the only other rider within sniffing distance, laying down a 56.978 thanks to those whoops where he’s been next-level all night.

Luke Clout kept the Kawasaki flag high in fourth, Moss solid in fifth, and Cedric Soubeyras rounded out the six… still probably bragging about “that” holeshot from his heat.

Top Six – SX1 Superpole

  1. Jett Lawrence – HON – 56.076
  2. Hunter Lawrence – HON – 56.422
  3. Dean Wilson – HON – 56.978
  4. Luke Clout – KAW – 57.373
  5. Matt Moss – KAW – 57.525
  6. Cedric Soubeyras – HON – 58.013

SX1 Race One

Jett Lawrence made the opening SX1 Final look easy… perhaps too easy. He settled early, took the lead and immediately started stacking time on the field. By lap three, he was already stretching a five-second gap, and from there it became a masterclass. Perfect scrubs, outrageous whoop speed and total control from the front. It was smooth, fast and clinical. Is he the new Doctor?

SX1 – Final One – TBG Image

Dean Wilson delivered a wily veteran’s ride for second. He stayed calm through the early chaos, passed when he needed to and kept his laps tidy. He never looked threatened and never let the race get messy.

Matt Moss had grabbed the holeshot (of course!) and soaked up the early glory before the Lawrences arrived. Still, he rode with grit and held third with a strong performance that showed how sharp his opening laps still are.

SX1 – Final One – TBG Image

Hunter Lawrence had to fight from a terrible start. He was buried after turn one but clawed his way through the pack with serious pace. His mid-race lap pace was right there with Jett, but the early damage was too much to undo in ten laps.

Hayden Mellross deserves a nod after punching his way in from the LCQ and backing it up with a steady top-five ride.

SX1 – Final One – Hayden Mellross, Hunter Lawrence, Luke Clout – TBG Image

Cedric Soubeyras fought hard, Dylan Wills was solid, and the mid-pack turned into the usual elbows-out brawl.

Up front, though, it was a Lawrence show. Jett clear, Hunter charging hard, and everyone else trying to survive the whoops.

Jett Lawrence did what Jett Lawrence does: a great start, settled, then disappeared into the Marvel Stadium distance. The kid whipped it over the line like he was sending a postcard to the rest of the field. Clinical, clean, almost rude.

SX1 – Final Two – TBG Image

Hunter Lawrence clawed his way into second and held it, but never seriously threatened his little brother. Dean Wilson kept his championship campaign bulletproof with another rock-solid podium ride in third.

SX1 – Final Two – Jett Lawrence – TBG Image

The story of the race early on was Matt Moss, who grabbed the holeshot and ran the Lawrence pace longer than anyone expected. He eventually faded to fourth, but… that was proper veteran grit.

SX1 – Final Two – Jett Lawrence, Matt Moss, Hunter Lawrence – TBG Image

Hayden Mellross rode the wheels off the 45 for fifth and looked strong every lap.

Cedric Soubeyras kept Monster Honda’s points tally healthy with sixth, Dylan Wills was tidy in seventh, and Dylan Walsh put the KTM exactly where it should be in eighth. Nicoletti and Tanti rounded out the ten.

No one had anything for Jett. Again. The crowd loved it anyway… especially that last-lap whip.

SX2 Heat One

Cole Thompson put on a tidy, controlled ride in the opening SX2 Heat and looked a class above from the moment the gate dropped.

Kawasaki locked out most of the front spots with Barham and Budd running solidly behind him, while Ryder Kingsford kept the pressure on from fourth. Jake Cannon rounded out the top five.

Thompson’s pace points to a solid showdown with McElrath later, even if qualifying already hinted the American might be operating on a different level.

Alex Larwood nailed the start and looked settled early, but McElrath wasted no time carving forward from a mediocre launch. He moved into second with a clean pass on Byron Dennis, then started reeling Larwood in with steady, measured laps.

Half a lap from home, Larwood tried to step away, but McElrath simply slid underneath in the last corner… no fuss, no elbows, just a clear reminder of who carries the pace in the class.

SX2 LCQ Results

The SX2 LCQ underlined the smaller field this year. With only eight riders on track and four of them going through, the whole thing lacked the urgency and chaos you normally expect from an AMA–style last chance. Four riders eliminated, four progressing… it felt more like a polite formality than a desperate fight for survival

SX2 Race One

The opening SX2 Final delivered exactly what you’d hope for on a tight Marvel Stadium track: a freight train of 250s running nose-to-tail and absolutely no room for errors.

SX2 – Final One – Cole Thompson – TBG Image

Cole Thompson got the jump early and settled into a fierce rhythm out front. Rhys Budd tucked in behind him and looked comfortable for the first half of the race, but Thompson just kept upping the pace and gradually prised the door shut on any comeback from the Kawasaki rider.

Alex Larwood was the mover through the pack. He built speed as the laps ticked on, passed Kingsford with confidence, then reeled Budd in with a blend of clean technique and sheer stubbornness. By the final laps, he was the fastest rider on track and made second place look inevitable.

Ryder Kingsford had the speed to win but just didn’t nail the early laps, leaving himself too much work to do once the leaders cleared off. He still locked down a strong podium threat before settling for third.

Shane McElrath spent the first half looking strangely flat compared with his heat race pace, but once he found a flow, he charged hard late and hauled himself into the top five. There’s clearly more in the tank.

Behind them, Budd dug deep to hang on as the front four cleared out. The rest of the field was locked in constant scraps: Barham solid, Cannon aggressive as usual, and Olander fighting to stay inside the top ten.

It was a polished, patient ride from Thompson, who controlled the whole thing from the front.

SX2 Race Two

Shane McElrath came out in the final bout like someone had flicked a switch. After seemingly warming into the night, he finally opened the taps and left everyone behind. He grabbed control instantly, hit his rhythms perfectly and disappeared up the road. A ten-second lead in an eight-lap sprint says everything. Pure class.

Ryder Kingsford was the best of the locals again. He settled quickly, kept his lines tidy and held second without ever getting dragged into the chaos behind him. It was composed, clever riding from a kid who is learning fast. He would later note that Kayden Minnear’s breakout 2024 Aus X Open was in his mind.

Cole Thompson had to work harder than he wanted. Another average start meant he spent the first half slicing through the pack before finally landing in third. The speed was there, but he never got the clean track needed to go after Kingsford.

Kaleb Barham backed up his Race 1 win with a gritty fourth. Not quite the same spark once McElrath lit the fuse, but still a seriously strong ride across the whole night.

Alex Larwood was steady in fifth. Not wild, not messy, just consistent laps that kept him clear of the Barham-Budd-Todd battle forming behind.

The drama came mid-race. A heavy crash brought out the medical flag, and both Byron Dennis and Campbell Williams were later penalised for jumping while the flag was being waved. Harsh, but completely by the book.

Behind them, it stayed elbows-out: Budd, Todd, Constantinou and O’Bree all landing inside the ten while the rhythm lanes got choppier and the whoops kept biting the local lads..

This one belonged entirely to McElrath… the rest of the class were racing for second.
